Decisions, Decisions
Thinking about college can be scary for most juniors. I always brushed the thought under the rug but now I have to get serious. I envision myself partying a little too much in a medium sized college enjoying my four years with friends but I will always know my priorities comes first. We are almost to the next step in our lives and we want to be prepared to make the right decision. I really didn’t think this day would come so fast when I was little but I couldn’t be more excited. The stressful 13 years of our lives are almost over and we can finally branch off from the people we’ve been forced to know. When I first started this assignment, I had no idea what to look for. I began brainstorming and figured out what I need in the college of my choice. The colleges, Michigan State University and Alabama State University, are both about the same financially but Alabama State University is located far from home and is big but not too big.
Cost will play a big role in deciding where I will go for college. As a kid, financially we didn't struggle at all. Everything was handed down to me and I couldn’t be more grateful. Now as I get older and I don't have rich parents who will pay my tuition, I want to be careful what I will choose. I’m embracing the struggle through college but being in debt for the rest of my life is not an option. The two colleges that really stuck out and weren't too expensive were Michigan State University and Alabama State University. Michigan State University, being in state, had an estimated cost of $25,286 per year (“MSU”). According to “ASU”, Alabama State University, being out of state, has an estimated cost of $25,222 per year. Both are about the same cost but one doesn't meet one of my main requirements.
Another necessity in my college search will be location. I will not live anywhere close to my parents. Some people would say, “You shouldn’t want to be too far from your parents.” I wouldn’t mind going to school somewhere close to my parents but I really dont want to stay in Michigan my whole life. Being independent and not having to rely on my parents ever again will be one of my main goals after highschool. Michigan State University would be a nice college to attend but East Lansing is only a few hours away from home. Alabama State University however is far from home, Montgomery, Alabama, and the estimated cost is cheaper than Michigan State University. Location is important but socially and environmentally, size is just as important.
The final and last requirement in my dream college will be size. Size is important because of the social aspects and the environments for learning. I want to attend a well known big college but I also don't want it to be too big. Alabama State University is medium sized while Michigan State University is large (“College Planning Tools”). I plan to live on campus, therefore I don't want to travel too far from class to class. Michigan State University also doesn't allow cars on campus making it even harder to get from class to class. Too many factors can affect one decision of your life.
Making the right choice will be difficult for me. There’s so many colleges to choose from and they all offer different things for me but it’s still all unclear, My parents want me to be different and branch off in as many different ways as possible. I couldn't agree more. The college that really caught my eye would be Alabama State University. My mom would be happy because she also wanted me to attend a historically black college. I know some people again would say, “Don’t always do what your parents want but do what your heart wants.” I have given this some thought and I actually believe going to a historically black college would teach me some things about myself I really didn’t know going to a high school where I’m the minority. This isn't my final decision on where I will attend college but I will give this college my interest. Choosing the right college sure will be hard for me and some of my peers.
